We are the last individuals of our species on Earth. How shall we respond? How shall we act?

If industrial civilization is maintained, climate change will cause human extinction in the near term. If industrial civilization falls, sufficient ionizing radiation will be released from the world's nuclear power plants to cause human extinction in the near term.

In the wake of this horrific conclusion, conservation biologist Guy McPherson proposes we act with compassion, courage, and creativity. He suggests we act with the kind of empathy for which humans are renowned. In other words, he suggests we act with decency toward the humans and other organisms with which we share this beautiful planet.

Going Dark is the story of one scientist's response to the horrors we face. It is a deeply personal narrative infused with abundant evidence to support its terrifying claims. In the words of syndicated cartoonist David Fitzsimmons, McPherson's "approach is disarming and his message is both life-changing and convincingly alarming. A blend of Paul Revere with Rachel Carson, Guy McPherson is a significant voice of rational conscience nudging in the wilderness. Fierce as Ed Abbey, and equally prophetic, Professor McPherson is a modern-day John Muir with a global perspective. Beyond the warnings is a body of thoughtful and pragmatic real world ideas."

I taught with Guy at the U of AZ. I know how careful an environmental scientist he was and, when he is concerned to the point of anguish, everyone should be. A compelling argument for the probability of near-term human extinction that doesn't offer a fluffy pillow of false hope yet implores everyone to do all they can while they can. Read it and decide what you want to do with your own life under these circumstances. I'm all but certain you will not be unmoved by what he has done.

Going Dark eBook Guy R McPherson Reviews

I heard about this book and its author in a documentary in which McPherson predicted that the accelerated increase in global temperatures will cause manmade infrastructures to default. Most significantly, nuclear power plants around the world could go into meltdown, releasing tremendous amounts of ionizing radiation. This is a very sobering concept and it does have scientific authenticity. Given McPherson’s history as a professor and his area of scientific interest, I wanted to learn more from him.
There are many, brief mentions of research findings, but the author never goes into any intelligent discussion about them; and if you go looking for final reference pages at the back of the book, you won’t find any. Instead of a factual discussion, the narrative catapults into a radicalizing diatribe on the evils of the American Empire’s social/governmental ideologies, a discourse that echoes Marx, Kaczinski, Koresh, and Nietzsche. I began to realize that the book is astoundingly a prime example for “freedom of the press,” something that is granted by this maligned empire. It was this latter that allowed me to forgive myself for buying it.
in an insane world, a voice of reason and warning, too bad our corrupt elected representatives will never have a clue.
Bleak future that I really hope does not come to pass, but he makes a very compelling case. The most depressing prediction for humanity and most of our fellow earthlings one can imagine.
The description was quite blunt honest about the content of this book. It is a truly depressing read, but that's only because he delivers direct unfiltered truth and backs it up with studies. If you've heard of the popular possible ways of a doomsday scenario from that show doomsday preppers, then you got an idea of what he'll be going over. He mentions fiat currency, climate change, peak oil, peak water, peak phosphorus, and even the decline of the world's life support systems in general. He supports all of this with just study after study, but he also mentions in some cases how these kinds of studies are becoming harder and harder to find (implying forced censorship).
As with all Guy's books, this is a work of genius and bravery! He is unique among radical environmentalists today... and, as a bonus, he's a terrific, entertaining, and humorous writer. A great book about the most important topic in the world.
Almost all climate change reports issued by agencies and governments around the world, and views written by scientists and climate experts across the globe, are, out of concern for the emotions of the residents of this planet and the unthinkable extinguishing of all hope, very conservative in nature, and hedge on the darkness of the real truth. Dr. McPherson, for many years, was one of the multitude of voices pleading with governments and peoples to make the difficult, but necessary changes needed to reverse the ravages of climate change/global warming, while there was a chance to do so. He has reluctantly accepted the dictates of science and nature, and presented here the ultimate and logical conclusion . . . human civilization is "going dark", by its own choice. Dr. McPherson provides a solid assemblage of research data and facts that inescapably lead to his verdict . . . a verdict that is becoming more common with scientists and experts as each month and year pass. He references all of this evidence, making it easy to verify, which I took time to do. I thank him for that . . . and I thank him, too, for his brutal honesty. I don't like sugar coating, and this book doesn't do that. I thank Dr. McPherson, as well, for interweaving all of this evidence with his own human story, emotions, thoughts, and regrets . . . all of which each of us will experience as this irreversible march nears it end.
Guy McPherson gathers the freely available scientific information that anyone, with the time and knowledge of where to look, can read, which will tell the sad truth of why the human species is doomed to near term extinction (30 years or less, perhaps in as little as ten). He wants to put a smiley face on it to avoid causing people to shut down, but that ironically will inevitably cause people to think that "if there is a chance, we will survive," and they then do nothing. In order to avoid this fate, it requires near universal acknowledgement of the problem by the people with the power to change everything quickly governments, religions, and business leaders. It requires the immediate shutdown of industrialized society. This has been shown to be unlikely to happen by game theorists. Thus the poignancy of the book where he admits his mistakes that likely cost him time with family and friends and his coming to terms with the impending extinction. Admittedly, there are no car chases, but there is an end of the world scenario, but there is no James Bond or Superman around to save everything at the last moment. Read this book if you dare.
